Course content:

This seminar aims at developing and deepening knowledge and skills related to the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Students will understand mayor IFRS accounting and reporting issues and the IFRS regulatory environment, the standard setting process and recent projects. Additionally, they will be able to discuss significant differences between US-GAAP and IFRS, the convergence process and projects between FASB and IASB.


Structure:

In advance to the seminar, participants have to prepare a group paper. During the seminar at the KPMG office in Munich each group will present their paper. Following each presentation a professional from KPMG will hold an interactive workshop with exercises on the topic to deepen the understanding.  The group papers/presentations can be written/held in English or in German. The workshops will be held in English.

  • Investments and Financial Assets
  • Hedging/Derivatives
  • Revenue Recognition
  • Business Combinations
  • Deferred Taxes
  • Pensions
  • Share-based Payment

Dates:

Introductory session:
Tuesday, 04.05.2017, 5.30 pm - 7.30 pm (FW 2102)

Submission of group papers and preparatory meeting for the seminar:
Wednesday, 21.06.2017, 5.30 pm - 6.30 pm (FW 2102)
Please send an electronic copy and additionally an anonymized copy of your group paper to your advisor in advance.

Seminar at the KPMG office in Munich:
Monday, 26.06.2017 to Friday, 30.06.2016 (No seminar on Thursday) starting at 9 am. Travel costs from Augsburg (Hochzoll) to Munich (RE/RB; 2nd class) will be covered by KPMG.

All dates are preliminary. Changes will be published in time. Attendance is compulsory for all dates.


Application:

The number of participants is restricted. The application starts on April 18, 2017 and is possible until April 28, 2017 at noon. Students will be notified about acceptance via email.

Please submit the following documents via email to christina.manthei@wiwi.uni-augsburg.de:

  • Personal statement including motivation and accounting related knowledge (max. 1 page DIN A4)
  • Completed application form (available on Digicampus at start of application)
  • Current transcript of records (Studis-Auszug)

The available spots will be assigned considering the number and grades of courses at the department Schultze and the personal statement. Prior or parallel attendance of "Bilanzierung III" is recommended.

Please note that the application is binding, i.e. a participation in other courses with restrictions is not possible if the seminar is dropped or one of the requirements is not fulfilled.


Assessment:

The grade for the seminar is based on the following three components:

Group paper: 60%

Presentation: 25%

Participation: 15%

All components must be graded with at least a 4.0 to pass the seminar. Furthermore students are required to attend the PCA guest lectures. Every student is allowed to miss one lecture without an excuse. For further information and dates see here: http://www.wiwi.uni-augsburg.de/pca/

All accepted students will be registered in "STUDIS" automatically. Manual registration is not necessary.
